PIETA Memorials
& Retreats
Our PIETA Memorial Mass is held annually as a collective prayer for all our children who have died.
Started in 2017, the memorial is scheduled on the 2nd Friday in November to follow 'All Saints' and 'All Souls' Day. The Memorial aims to bring bereaved parents together as a community to celebrate the Eucharist, dedicate prayers to our beloved children, and to pray for families struggling with loss. We believe that the Mass brings comfort and support during the difficult time of loss; by leaning on those who share our pain and sadness, we gain strength and hope for the future. More importantly, each time we gather before the Eucharist, we remember the promise that one day we will all be joined with our loved ones in God’s kingdom.
PIETA Memorial Mass 2024
Thank you for sharing in the beautiful Pieta Memorial Mass 2024, held at St Mary of the Angels on Friday 8th Nov 2024. Deep gratitude to Friar Michael D'Cruz for celebrating the Eucharist and uniting us all in the faith of everlasting life. The choir - St Francis Xavier of the Church of St Ignatius - were truly the voices of angels whose beautiful singing assured us that the Lord is very present to our grief. We look forward to continuing the walk as a companions on this long journey, but nevertheless confident that we walk towards our loving God's embrace where all our children rest. Look out for information on the next Pieta Memorial Mass 2025 released in second quarter of next year.

We are grateful to Friar Michael D'Cruz and his team for hosting our Pieta Memorial Mass 2021 on Fri 12th Nov at the Church of St Mary of the Angels. Candles were lit and the peace of Christ moved among the 50 parents and friends gathered to remember their children and others whose families were unable to join in. Sr Elizabeth graciously echoed St Paul's letter to the Romans that nothing can come between us and the love of God, and Friar Michael reminded us with much aplomb that our children are unique because of our love which has defined them as we ourselves are defined by the love by Christ. And he recalled Christ's resurrection and the promise that one day we will all be reunited with Christ in our Heavenly Kingdom.
Friday 13th Nov 2020 at Good Shepherd Place
The 2020 memorial was held online and prayers were led by the Pieta team from Good Shepherd Place. It was a simple gathering of family and friends united by the loss of our children and inspired by God's promise that we will one day be together in heaven. Scripture from the Book of Wisdom reminded us that the "Souls of the virtuous are in the hands of God" ; Sr Elizabeth led a short meditation and a dedication prayer for our children closed the evening to Corrinne May's composition The Answer.
PRAYER FOR BLESSING OF THE TEALIGHT HOLDERS
Parents bring tealight holders to be blessed at mass so that when the return home they can continue to keep the Christ light glowing in remembrance of their child.
O God, almighty Father, we ask for your blessing upon these tea light holders.
As these tapers burn with visible fire and dispel the darkness of night, so may the hearts of these bereaved parents and families be comforted and consoled by the invisible fire of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus, we pray that every time a candle is lit in this holder, these parents are bestowed with Your hope and grace as they remember and miss their child. Let them know that You are with them throughout and especially in their most difficult moments.
May the light you give this day and every day remind them of the gift of their child, now in Your embrace. May Your light guide them in walking this grief journey amid the struggles of life.
We make this prayer through Christ our Lord who lives and reigns for ever and ever. AMEN
